Day 76

Published:

Today I woke up with one thing on my mind: soft serve. We slept in super late, catching up on sleep and not wanting to reach the Burney Falls general store before the ice cream train started rolling, so we didn’t leave until 8 to crush the nine miles to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Walking was easy and, after coming upon and motivating an injured Buff Baby, we made it to the store right at the 11 o’clock opening.

I had two hot dogs, a bag of chips, a Dr. Pepper, and a brownie sundae with caramel sauce and whipped cream. I had seconds on ice cream, obviously, and I regretted skipping thirds as we marched out into the blazing heat. Absolutely drenched in sweat after six miles of pretty gradual but quite sun-exposed up and down, we made it to Rock Creek and I immediately got in. We decided to linger while the heat chilled out, and the creek was the perfect temperature for a long soak so I didn’t get out for an hour.

After this, the climb was easy street: lots of shade, a nice breeze, and several helpful clouds allowed us to reach our site at the top in no time. And what a spot it was, with incredible sunset views of Mount Shasta. Probably one of the best spots I have had for the whole hike.
